Frequently Asked Questions 1. Do I need a learners permit to participate in the Basic Riders Course? YES. You must possess a validated motorcycle permit for the Basic Rider Course. To get a validated permit you must pass the written and eye test at the motor vehicle commission. Your permit must be valid for the duration of the BRC course. A motorcycle endorsement on your driver’s license is required for all other classes. 2. Do I need riding experience to take the BRC class? NO experience is necessary for the Basic Rider Course. However, you must be in reasonably good physical condition and be able to ride a bicycle. This course is both physically and mentally challenging and requires you to be well rested. We ask that you make no other commitments on weekend class days. 3. Do I need experience for the ERC or The Real Road courses? Yes. Before taking the Experienced Rider Course you should be familiar and comfortable with your motorcycle, about 500-1000 miles. Students taking The Real Road course should have a minimum of 3000 miles on their current motorcycle. In addition, an ERC course is strongly recommended as a prerequisite to the TRR course. 4. What do I need to bring with me to class? Motorcycles and helmets are provided for the Basic Rider Course, but you will need your basic riding gear. Basic riding gear includes; jacket or long sleeved shirt, long pants, full fingered gloves, and over the ankle boots. If you have your own DOT approved helmet you may wear it during the class. You will need rain gear, as we ride rain or shine. 5. What type of eye protection is required for the course? You may use glasses, sunglasses or a helmet mounted face
shield in the course. 6. What if the weather is poor on the class date? Be ready to ride the motorcycles as classes run rain or shine. Instructors will make the determination on rescheduling class. However, unless there is snow or lightning be ready to ride. 7. What types of motorcycles do you use in the BRC? We use 125-250cc motorcycles. Currently most of our motorcycles are 2006 or 2007 models. There is a motorcycle for each student. In all other courses you use your own motorcycle. 8. Can I take the course if I have a GDL permit or license? Starting in 2008 students with a valid NJ auto license and a "GDL" permit are eligible for the road test waiver. Students under 18 are required to have a parent present to sign a liability waiver before the end of Friday evenings class. 9. Does everyone pass the class? Every student leaves with a much greater knowledge of motorcycling. However, not every student will qualify for the road test waiver. In order to “pass” the course a student must attend all sessions, score an 80% or better on the written test, and pass a motorcycle skills test. There is a no retest policy. 10. Do all students complete the course? Unfortunately not all students will complete the class. The reasons
for this are varied but generally fall into the following categories. Poor physical
condition. The course is demanding and students in poor condition
sometimes do not have the stamina to complete the course. Late arrivals.
Students arriving after the start of the first exercise will not be permitted
to continue the class. We start promptly at the scheduled times. Motorcycle
control problems. The safety of the riders and rider coaches is very
important. Students that cannot control the motorcycle and are jeopardizing
their safety, other students, or the rider coaches will be asked to leave
the course. There are no refunds for students that do not complete a course
for any reason. |
